Workshops & Classes

Jan. 25- March 22nd, Monday Nights
This course focuses on making unique, compelling portraits using the subject's natural environment. Weekly photo shoots incorporate lessons on storytelling using the singular photographic frame as well as a variety of techniques to help develop a personal aesthetic. The goal is for each student to discover and explore his/her creative voice while developing the technical proficiency that consistently results in successful portraiture. Assignments challenge students' preconceptions and style, creating confident photographers with the ability to illustrate on film what their mind's eye clearly sees. Contemporary and historical masters of photography are studied and discussed as sources of inspiration. A shoot at McCadden Space studios in Hollywood is also included. Students must bring their own digital camera (minimum 6 megapixels) to class and have access to a printer.

Intermediate Studio & Location Lighting
May 10- June 20th (Alternating Thursdays & Sundays)
This eight-session advanced course, limited to eight students, is the next logical step for photographers with a basic understanding of artificial light, but who are interested in developing a sophisticated aesthetic. We’ll photograph both in the studio and on location while addressing common concerns for both scenarios. We’ll study the masters by dissecting their technique and learning from their vision. Weekly assignments will encourage creative problem solving, newly learned techniques, and challenging subject matter. Technical emphasis will be placed on fine-tuning basic skills, elaborate multi light setups, lighting large spaces, lighting for large groups, specialty light modifiers, augmenting available light, overpowering sunlight, and “dragging the shutter. Students are encouraged to trust the role his or her intuition plays in exceptional photography.
Following the first class session, the ensuing six meetings, on alternate Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons, will involve hands-on shooting both in the studio and on location. The final eighth class session will provide an opportunity for a group slide show presentation and to share experiences. Agency represented models will be provided.
